OUR HISTORY

Our story started in 1943

1943 – LOCAL WOMEN SAW A NEED
1952 – SENIOR CENTER OF SANTA BARBARA BEGAN
1997 – SENIOR CENTER BECAME LAGUNA COTTAGES
2008 – 818 BUILDING BUILT

In 1943 a group of local women volunteered their time and energy to provide a place with home-like hospitality for military personnel during World War II. After the war this visionary group saw the need for low income housing for the elderly, and so they redirected their energies and the Senior Center of Santa Barbara was born.

The original cottages were a “pilot project” that caught national attention of those working in geriatrics. The Senior Center became a national model that demonstrated the feasibility of providing low income housing for the elderly.

In 1997 the Senior Center of Santa Barbara was changed to Laguna Cottages for Seniors. What began as 14 apartments in 1952 has expanded to 55 apartments occupied by 58 seniors.
